Overview
Internal conversion and refurbishment of former 70's classrooms to create modern specialist teaching facility.

Project encompassed full design and specification, complete internal re-structuring, complex mechanical installations and ventilation, comprehensive electrical systems, flooring, specialist joinery, audio visual equipment, furnishing and a garden area.

The project took place in a single phase over Summer 2007 for completion in time for Autumn term 2007.

The Project
Following the success of the Playing for Success project at Worcester Rugby Club, Worcestershire County Council offered Iris this design and build conversion of part of the former Comberton Middle School site as part of the Wyre Forest Review. The building was to become a specialist teaching facility for children with special learning needs with a strong emphasis on Autism.
The project was on a tight timescale with the centre being needing to be complete for the beginning of the Autumn term. Iris' site manager David Griffiss was there from start to finish to ensure it all came together to the Iris standard.

With the very specific needs of these children in mind, Iris set about designing a suite of rooms which would be both calming and inspiring. Great care had to be taken with colour schemes and textures in order to reflect the agreed philosophy behind designing facilities for these users. The centre staff had not been involved with this type of project but Iris carefully guided them through the process, establishing their particular requirements and providing solutions to problems they had faced in the past.

Despite the short time frame available and the very rigid guidelines for design, Iris successfully completed the project on time and to a far higher standard than any of the client team imagined possible. 'We used high spec commercial fixtures and finishes throughout, blended with very durable materials to create and environment which was both fresh, inspiring and interesting, without making it too distracting for the users.' It is a classroom unlike any the kids have seen before. Contrasting furniture and funky fabric colours have been blended with natural ambient colours and subtle detailing. In the Lifeskills area, bistro style seating has been custom sprayed to match the high gloss kitchen cabinets.

The jewel in the crown so far as the kids are concerned is the Sensory Room. They've been treated to a comprehensive recreational multimedia installation including a 37 inch LCD TV, integrated audio system with ceiling speakers and a 'Slouchpod', 3 different games consoles and a huge leather trimmed chill out bunk.

Yet again Iris have demonstrated that high quality fit out and great design are well within the reach of all clients.
