Overview
Conversion of former Worcestershire County Council training and office building to create specialist educational facility. Project included detailed design and visualisation, extensive internal alterations, mechanical, electrical and air conditioning installations, decorative finishes and furnishing.

The project was a partnership between Worcestershire County Council, Worcester Rugby Club and the Department for Education and Sport. The build was sponsored by Iris, The Wooden Spoon Society and nPower.

The Project
The first job Glynn Lodge, centre manager for the proposed Playing for Success study centre, had to do was get his building designed and built for a fixed price. After several false starts with other contractors and designers he came across Iris in the Yellow Pages.

A meeting was quickly arranged and immediately Glynn's enthusiasm for the project was shared by the team at Iris. The brief was simple - 'I want the best one in the country'. To give Iris a chance at achieving it the existing provision was researched, including a visit to the facility at Nottingham Forest FC.

To help give some ownership to the kids who would be using the centre and build up support through the schools in the centre's catchment area, Iris helped Glynn set up a 2 day design workshop for the pilot group of children at Worcetser Rugby Club. This not only helped the design team to establish what the kids wanted to see in their centre but also gave them the opportunity to have a go at the design themselves.

Once the design was visualised and agreed, the construction phase went off without a hitch. Two days before christmas 2006 the furnished centre was handed over to a very grateful Glynn Lodge and representatives from all sponsors and partners. On being asked for an opinion during a tour of the centre by Iris, the Playing for Success scheme manager from the DFES stated 'it's the best one in the country, the flagship. I would never have thought it possible to get something like this for the kids.'
